Recently Facebook pushed an update that now has a feature for finding local, nearby (free) public WiFi hotspots. *sigh*

Okay, let’s just also keep in mind these facts about free public WiFi hotspots:

I get it, free is great. Free wifi isn’t great. Here is why:

  • If you insist on using free wifi, limit the actions you are taking on them. Use your phone to check sensitive accounts like banking, work email, anything where you have to sign in each time.
  • You have no idea who else has that “password” and what they are doing on the network.
  • It is popular for hackers to setup “free wifi” networks of their own, with a similar name to common hotspots. By the time you realize you’re not connected to a real network, you’ve probably tried logging in to several accounts…usersnames and passwords…
  • If you absolutely have to do work on a free network, please use your company VPN if you have one. Who cares about your own personal data, but at least protect your company info. You don’t want to end up on the front pages…
